Who We Are
Laurie Rowan is the proprietor and craftsman at Rowan House Cabinetry & Furniture.  He has been honing his skills in cabinet and furniture making for the past 20 years.  He brings commitment to the highest standard of workmanship in everything he does.
A few years back Laurie purchased a small saw mill to enable him to have complete control of the type of lumber that he uses to craft his creations.  He has been working with Western Birch, Cherry, Pine, Fir and Western Red Cedar.  Most of the lumber that he saws comes off of our own property and is air dried and dry piled under cover to cure naturally.  The pine and fir is all dead standing or bug attacked wood which is harvested off site.  We re-plant as much as we can.
Rowan House also provides a line of log furniture and custom pieces to suit your needs.  We use the highest quality joinery, finish and hardware.  All of our furniture is crafted from dry, standing timber, which is considered unsuitable for harvest by traditional forest companies.  The timber is either too small, too crooked or too cracked and as a result it would either be burned or mulched.  The very qualities which render it "useless" to others make it ideal for us, as they add character to our furniture as well as making our products environmentally friendly.
Rowan House is now also producing high quality urns and memento boxes in Birch, Cherry or Juniper; furniture reproductions, blanket chests.

Where We Are
Rowan House is situated in the beautiful, small community of Cherryville, BC, which is nestled at the base of the Monashee Mountains in Southern British Columbia, Canada.  We have been here since 1972.

About Our Style
We decided in 1977 that we wanted to build our own log home.   Having no previous log building experience we bought some books on the subject and I built a log doghouse.  I then tackled a log chicken house.  It was on the third round of the chicken house that I thought, "I've got it!"  My point?  Experience is the best teacher.  Once we were living in the house we decided we wanted some log furniture.  So, it was learning more about joinery.   First I built a hassock, then a bed, then a sofa chair, loveseat, sofa and stools, but I was still unhappy with the finish.  Even though I had the "character" logs, it was boring.  After two years of experimenting with finish, I had another "I've got it" moment and it was so simple.
The first step is the most important one, how we remove the bark.  We do everything we can to save all the natural features under the bark  all the natural colour, cat faces, pitch pockets, worm tracks, even the hair sized worm tracks that are under the bark and the telltale ring left by the wild honey suckle plant which killed the tree.  These "defects" are beautiful and when treated properly accent the character pieces and give the overall look a natural balance.
By word of mouth, the sales started to come.  A product line developed from the pieces we built for ourselves for a bedroom, kitchen, office/study, living room, etc., and from the custom orders we received.

Please have a look through our photos and price list.  We welcome custom orders to suit your style and home, and our natural look compliments any décor.

Laurie Rowan Heads the Cross Country Building Team at 2008 Olympics in China
Long time Cherryville resident, Laurie Rowan, took time off from his new business, Rowan House Cabinetry and Furniture, and headed off to China this Summer to work on the Olympic Equestrian Three Day Event Course in Hong Kong.
Laurie, a faller by trade at the time, started building cross country jumps as a side-line in the 1990s, when he met and built a course for former Olympian, Robin Hahn, at Robin’s training centre on Mabel Lake Road, Lumby.  It was at Long House that Laurie met Nick Holmes-Smith, then just back from the Olympics in Seoul, Korea and captain of the Canadian Eventing Team.  Laurie and his son Ben started building the courses that Nick designed and together they had courses in New Zealand, the U.S. and Canada.  Laurie and Ben went on to build the Pan American Course in Winnipeg, Manitoba, for world renowned British designer, Mike Etherington-Smith.  Mike is also the designer for the 2008 Olympic cross country course.
Laurie is currently one of only two people who teach Course Design and Construction for Equine Canada, the national sport organization which governs the sport of Eventing in Canada.
